WB #11 for our time
01 July 2009
Here's a somewhat bothersome (but ultimately pleasing) piece from the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Berry in our time | courier-journal.com | The Courier-Journal.
Newsweek has taken notice of Kentucky's treasured man of letters, Wendell Berry. Berry's book "Unsettling of America" is ranked #11 on Newsweek's list of 50 Books For Our Times. Here's what Newsweek had to say about Berry's work: "First published in 1982, this book-length argument for the family farm-and against agribusiness-is simply the most thoughtful book on modern agriculture." Number one on the list is "The Way We Live Now" by Anthony Trollope.

This item bothers me for a couple of reasons. At first, I could not find any trace of a list of "50 Books for Our Times" at the Newsweek website, but persistence led me to "What to Read Now. And Why". Also, the C-J article quotes Newsweek (correctly, as it turns out) to the effect that "Unsettling" was first published in 1982. It was 1977.
